The Acolyte Ministry History

The Acolyte Ministry is comprised of children, young people, and adults of both sexes who have devoted themselves to assisting the priest around the altar during the celebration of Mass or any liturgical celebration.

Pope St. Pius X noted, “The Holy Mass is a prayer itself, even the highest dedicated by our Redeemer at the Cross, and repeated every day on the Altar.

St. John Paul 11 in an address to Altar Servers in 2001 observed that “…the altar occupies a privileged place in the liturgical celebration. 

The Ministry of Acolytes are a group of people who devote themselves to serving at Mass and present themselves to the community, giving the congregation an experience that Jesus Christ is present and active in every liturgical act.

In essence, the acolytes are much more than “helpers of the priest.” They are servers of Jesus Christ. Altar Servers are friends of Jesus, determined to reverently serve God and his people in their posture, dress, and appearance when serving around the Altar of God.
